How NPS works at retirement

Your contributions build a market-linked corpus until retirement. At normal exit, at least 40% is generally used to purchase an annuity, while the remaining amount can be withdrawn as a lump sum.

The pension depends on the annuity rate available when you purchase it, rather than the return earned while accumulating the NPS corpus.

Monthly pension = Annuity corpus × Annuity rate / 12
Annuity corpus — maturity value annuitizedAnnuity rate — insurer's payout rate

Common questions

Can I withdraw the full corpus at 60?+

Under normal NPS exit rules, at least 40% of the corpus is generally used to purchase an annuity. Different rules can apply to smaller corpuses and specific exit cases.

Is the lump-sum withdrawal really tax-free?+

Under current rules, up to 60% of the total NPS corpus withdrawn as a lump sum at normal exit is tax-exempt, subject to applicable conditions.

What happens to the annuity rate after I buy it?+

The pension terms depend on the annuity option and provider selected at purchase. Some products fix the payout for life.

NPS vs SIP — which builds a bigger corpus?+

That depends on contributions, returns, costs, asset allocation and time. NPS also has withdrawal and annuitization rules that differ from a mutual-fund SIP.
