Can Indians invest in US stocks and Nasdaq?

Yes. Resident Indians can invest abroad under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), up to USD 250,000 per person per financial year. The harder question is which route suits you.

2
Simplest to start

International mutual funds and fund-of-funds

Invest in rupees through an Indian fund that holds overseas stocks.

What you can buy
A limited set of global, US, Asia and emerging-market schemes.
Limits
Indian fund houses share an industry-wide overseas cap (USD 7 billion for funds, plus a separate USD 1 billion for ETFs).
Watch-outs
Because the cap is nearly used up, many schemes have paused or capped fresh investments. Only a few were open as of August 2026, and availability changes often.
3
Built around you

Advisory-led global portfolio

An adviser designs the portfolio, plans the remittances and keeps everything in one view.

What you get
IC-backed model portfolios across US, Europe, Asia and emerging markets, with ongoing review and rebalancing.
Best for
Investors who want one strategy across India and abroad, not scattered holdings.
Watch-outs
All investments carry market risk. Your adviser will explain costs, risks and compliance before you start.

Estimate the TCS on your overseas remittance

Before you invest abroad, see how much tax may be collected at source on the money you send. Enter your plan below.

The financial year runs from 1 April to 31 March. Remittances for education, medical treatment and overseas tour packages are taxed differently and are not counted here.

Total sent this year after this remittance₹15,00,000
Amount above the ₹10 lakh threshold₹5,00,000
Estimated TCS at 20% on this remittance
₹1,00,000
100% of the ₹10 lakh threshold used
TCS is not an extra cost of investing. It is collected upfront and can be claimed as credit against your income tax when you file. Rates and thresholds are as announced in Budget 2026. This is an estimate, so confirm with your bank and tax professional.

Common pitfalls to avoid

Six mistakes Indian global investors make

A sound global investing plan starts by avoiding these common planning, tax and compliance errors.

0101

Picking an app before a plan

The best app depends on fees, forex spreads, custody and reporting, not just a slick interface. Start with how much you will invest and for how long.

0202

Ignoring TCS and the ₹10 lakh threshold

Large remittances can lock up cash as TCS until you claim it back. Timing and sizing your transfers matters.

0303

Using the wrong purpose code or splitting remittances

Banks and tax authorities expect remittances to be correctly classified and tracked. Mistakes can cause compliance problems.

0404

Forgetting to disclose foreign assets

Resident taxpayers generally need to report foreign assets and foreign income in their Indian return, even when no tax is due.

0505

Concentrating in a few popular stocks

Buying only well-known US tech names is not diversification. A global portfolio spreads risk across regions, sectors and asset types.

0606

Tracking only the share price

Capital gains are computed in rupees, so the forex rate on the day you remit and the day you sell both matter. Keep records from day one.

The best app depends on fees, forex spreads, custody and reporting, not just a slick interface. Start with how much you will invest and for how long.

Questions Indian investors ask

How do I invest in international stocks from India?

The two main routes are direct investing under LRS (you remit money abroad and buy stocks or ETFs in an overseas account) and international mutual funds or fund-of-funds that invest overseas on your behalf in rupees. Direct investing offers wider choice. Funds are simpler but face industry-wide caps that often pause fresh investments.

What is the LRS limit for investing abroad?

USD 250,000 per person per financial year (1 April to 31 March). It is counted across all your banks and all permitted purposes, and it resets every year. Unused limit does not carry forward.

Is TCS charged when I invest in US stocks?

For overseas investments, TCS applies at 20% on the portion of remittances above ₹10 lakh in a financial year, as per Budget 2026. It is collected by your bank at the time of remittance and can be adjusted against your income tax liability when you file your return.

Are international mutual funds open for investment?

Many are not. Indian mutual funds share an industry-wide overseas investment limit, and several fund houses have paused or capped fresh subscriptions in 2026. A few schemes reopen from time to time, then close again. Your adviser can tell you what is open today and what the alternatives are.

Which is the best app to invest in US stocks from India?

There is no single best app. Compare them on regulation and custody, how remittances are handled, forex spreads and fees, the range of stocks and ETFs, tax and reporting support, and what happens to your assets if the platform shuts down. An adviser can help you weigh these against your goals.

How are gains from US stocks taxed in India?

Gains are taxed in India as capital gains. Foreign shares held for less than 24 months are generally treated as short-term and taxed at your slab rate. Dividends may also face US withholding tax, and you must report foreign assets and income in your Indian return. Tax rules change, so confirm your position with a tax professional.

Can I invest in Chinese stocks from India?

Through a global brokerage under LRS you can generally access Chinese and Hong Kong-listed stocks and ETFs, depending on the platform. Single-country exposure is concentrated, so many investors hold China as one part of a diversified emerging-markets allocation. Ask your adviser how much, if any, suits your risk profile.

Do I need to be wealthy to start?

No. Global diversification is relevant even if you have not started investing yet. The first session is free and is about understanding your options and constraints.
